DMASS: Semi Sales Ride Currency Gains; Underlying Growth Encouraging

The European semiconductor distribution industry has rolled into 2015 on the same momentum shown in the positive trend from the last quarters of 2014, albeit with a little help from currency fluctuations. According to DMASS (Distributors’ and Manufacturers’ Association of Semiconductor Specialists), semiconductor distribution sales in Q1/2015 grew by 13.3% to 1.82bn Euro, the highest recorded quarterly sales since the introduction of the Euro in 2002.

Although distributors faced several challenges, including price pressure, currency fluctuation, and margin erosion, a stronger global economy and higher demand from several market segments, including industrial and medical, buoyed the entire industry in 2014.

Top 50: A Year of Recovery for Distributors

There is no doubt that distributors continue to face the same challenges year after year – rising costs, eroding margins, currency fluctuation, and the global economy. However, in 2014 market conditions slowly started to improve. There was a gradual improvement in the global economy and some increased capital spending. Overall, the supply side was well balanced. Lead times were generally short and there wasn’t a lot of surplus.

Modest Growth for Electronics Distributors

North American (NA) revenue for the top 50 distributors in 2014 has turned upward after two years of flat growth. NA revenue increased $1.4 billion or five percent, reaching $31.7 billion in 2014, up from $30.3 billion in 2013, according to the Electronics Purchasing Strategies (EPS) survey of the electronic components distribution industry. In 2012, NA revenue dropped by $600.0 million or 1.9 percent due to slower demand, falling profit margins, and economic uncertainty.

Whose Design Chain Is It?
